Earthquake in Kranidi

On Tuesday 16th January 2024, a moderate earthquake hit between Kranidi and Leonidio at 07:20am waking residents in Kranidi with a strong vibration, which was felt as far away as Athens.  According to Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.75 on the Richter scale and particularly felt in Kranidi.  The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the sea in the Argolic Gulf, near the Ermionida peninsula, at a depth of 14.5 kms which was felt in Spetses as well.  The earthquake was followed by a cluster of smaller tremors in roughly the same area.  The research director of the Geodynamic Institute acknowledged that the area between Kranidi and Leonidio houses a fault that is prone to seismic activity.  There have been no reports of injuries or damage to property.

Greece is located in a complex geological boundry zone in the Eastern Mediterranean between the Eurasian and  African Plates.  The Northern part of Greece lies on the Eurasian Plate while the Southern part lies on the Aegean Sea Plate.  The Aegean Sea Plate is moving SouthWestwards with respect to the Eurasian Plate at about 30mm per year, while the African Plate is moving Northward, sliding beneath the Aegean Sea Plate at a rate of about 40mm per year.
