A new monument was unveiled to fallen aviator Squadron Leader Michael Papamikhail in Ermioni.  The ceremony was held on Saturday 18th November 2023.  The monument is in memory of the late Squ.Ldr Michael Papamihikhail, born in Ermioni on 12th June 1935, who died on 1st November 1965 in the line of duty, aged 30, whilst serving his country during a scheduled flight.  The unveiling of the monument was done by the Regional Mayor of Ermionida Ioannis Geoprgopoulos, MP for Argolida Yiannis Andrianos, President of the Council of Ermioni Josif Ganossis, daughter of the fallen pilot Annita Papamikhail and his granddaughter Natalia Fontain.  With a military battalion and a brass band in attendance, speeches followed the unveiling ceremony made by military, civic and religious dignitaries.

Michael Papamikhail was born in Ermioni, had a great personality, took part in community events and became the main drummer of the Sea Scouts.  He graduated from the Air Force Academy (Reserved Pilots Division) in 1956 with the rank of Second Lieutenant.  The Papamikhail monument is located at the main entrance to Ermioni, just before the modern necropolis cemetery of the town.
