From Wednesday 18th June 2025, Greece has imposed strict new rules on motorhome and trailer travellers, banning free camping and limited overnight parking to designated campsites, with heavy fines for all those who violate the rules.  The updated Highway Code (K.O.K.) now legally recognises recreational vehicles as temporary accommodation, defining standards for motorhomes and trailers under article 4.  The Hellenic Motorhome and Trailer Association (S.E.A.R.T.E.) praised the law for supporting sustainable tourism and granting campers equal road rights, emphasising that motorhomes, trailers and caravans thrive in motion, respecting nature.  Protecting our environment is both a legal and moral duty.  The new regulations also aim to ensure public hygiene and support of 300+ licenced campsites.  

Key Restrictions:

• Free camping is prohibited on beaches, forests, archaeological sites, municipal parking lots, roadside rest areas, and parks.
  
• Private land can host only one camper unless it’s a licensed campsite.
  
• Setting up outdoor gear (such as tables and chairs) in public spaces is prohibited.

Parking Rules:

• In residential areas, motorhomes up to 7.5 meters in length can park without time limits; larger vehicles and trailers are restricted to a 24-hour stay.
• Outside residential zones, parking is allowed in designated spaces or on road shoulders, parallel to the road’s edge, unless prohibited by signs.

 Penalties:

• Illegal overnight parking or camping incurs a €300 fine per person on the spot.
  
• Court cases may result in fines of up to €3,000 and a prison term of up to three months for repeat offenders.

Travellers in Greece are advised to stay at one of 300+ licenced campsites and avoid overnight parking in unregulated areas.
