From Monday 21st July 2025 a 'Port Tourism Fee' came into effect targeting cruise ship passengers that disembark as part of sightseeing excursions at all Greek ports.  The fee, introduced under article 42 of law 4256/2014 officially called the 'Sustainable Tourism Fee', is part of a government initiative to boost state revenue from tourism related activities.  The charge will apply to all passegers disembarking at Greek ports during organised cruise stops and will vary depending on the season and destination.  Although the fee will be paid by the cruise passengers, responsibility for its collection and electronic remittance to the Greek state lies with the cruise companies and shipping agents.  The whole process will be managed by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy through a dedicated digital platform.

The 'Port Tourism Fee' highlights Greece's broader efforts to regulate and capitalise on the booming cruise tourism sector, especially in heavily visited destinations like Mykonos and Santorini, when the island's local population more than doubles when the numerous cruise ships all arrive on the same day.  The island ports affected in this area would be Hydra, Spetses and Poros.

• Transitional period - 1st April to 31 May -  €12 at Mykonos and Santorini - €3 for other Greek ports
• High Season - 1 June to 30 September -  €20 at Mykonos and Santorini - €5 for other Greek ports
• Transitional period - 1 Oct to 31 October - €12 at Mykonos and Santorini - €3 for other Greek ports
• Low Season -  1 November to 31 March -   €4 at Mykonos and Santorini -  €1 for other Greek ports
