Constantine Tassoulas has been elected as the new President of the Hellenic Republic, succeeding Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the first woman to serve as Greece's head of state.  Constantine Tassoulas, 65, was elected for a 5-year term to the largely ceremonial post by the 300-member parliament on Wednesday 12th February 2025, in the fourth round of voting.  Speaking after the result was declared, Tassoulas called the Presidency "a supreme honour for me, but above all a precious responsibility".  A former Greek Culture Minister, he helped reinvigorate the campaign to repatriate the 2,500-year-old Parthenon sculpures, also know as the Elgin Marbles, from the British Museum in London.  He collaborated with lawyer Amal Clooney, who lent her support to the country's bid for the sculptures' return to Greece.

Tassoulas' election came despite protests against him from Greek citizens outraged at the failure to investigate the country's worst ever rail disaster, the 2023 head-on rail crash at Tempe that killed 57 people.  The disaster occurred when Tassoulas was the parliamentary speaker, and parliament's slowness to mount a judicial probe into its causes has become an on-going controversy.

Constantine Tassoulas will officially take office as President of the Hellenic Republic on Thursday 13th March 2025, from the outgoing President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, five years to the day since the first global covid-19 pandemic lockdown in Greece.
